Mitchelstown's Galtee Wheelers will be taking on a marathon of cycling to raise money for the Mitchelstown Lion's Club just before Christmas.

On December 20, between 9am and 9pm, 24 volunteers will be taking part in a 12 hour turbo cycling session outside Reidy's Supervalu. Over the course of the day, they will cover a virtual distance of more than 620km, which is the same as cycling from Malin to Mizen Head.

PRO for the Lion's Club, Lisa Sheehan said that they will be doing a bucket collection on the day and they will also be selling tickets for their 'Sponsor a Christmas Tree Light' campaign.

"We are aware that a lot of people are fundraising, so you have to think of something different and unique and all of the money raised will be kept local to help people in this area," she said.

She also thanked the Galtee Wheelers for coming on board with such a fun and novel fundraising idea, and she hopes that people will support the campaign and give what they can, as Christmas can be a very difficult time financially for some people and the money raised will help to ease that burden.

Anthony Hanrahan of the Galtee Wheelers said that have been involved with the Lion's Club for the past few years and they wanted to do something to support a local group.

"We've done a lot of cycling tours as a club, but this is something different and we hope it will grab people's attention," he said.

"If everyone just threw €2 into the buckets, it would make a huge difference," Anthony added.
