People are not inclined to try their luck on Friday 13th due to the old adage 'unlucky for some'. However, that was definitely not the case for a Co Limerick father when he picked a bunch of random numbers and purchased his €3 EuroMillions ticket with the Plus game in the Centra Store in Kilfinane on Friday, 13th June, 2014. The lucky gent won €500,000, the top prize in EuroMillions Plus game!

"It looks as though he may well be local, but we don't know," Marguerite Sheehy of Sheehy's Centra told The Avondhu this week. "There's a lot of excitement about it locally and it has caused quite a buzz about the place. He certainly seems cool about it, not collecting it for a few weeks. But we are delighted for wheoever it is," Marguerite said, adding that it has seen the ticket sales in the shop increase since the win a few weeks ago.

The man who was presented with his prize in National Lottery offices in Dublin during the week and who was accompanied by one of his daughters said he just couldn't believe his luck.

"On Friday 13 June, I was in the church saying a prayer for a friend who was ill at the time. When I came out, I thought to myself ‘will I buy a EuroMillions ticket, or not?’ You always think you won’t win, but I bought one anyway, and here I am today, sitting with a glass of champagne and a cheque for €500,000 in front of me. It’s really hard to credit," smiled the incredulous man.

"You’re asking me about plans for the win, and you probably won’t believe me when I say that it’s all for the family. But I mean it. I have everything I want – my health, an active life, and a great family who love me and look out for me all the time. They’ve always been so good to me and I said to myself that if I ever won the lottery, it would be for them, and now it really is," smiled the happy dad.

To date the National Lottery has raised over €4.4 billion for good causes. This level of funding has made a significant difference to communities, projects and individuals in the areas of Youth, Sports, Recreation, Amenities, Health, Welfare, Arts, Culture, National Heritage and the Irish Language.
