At the end of this month, there will be a seminar on how to be socially responsible and accountable on social media in the River Lee Hotel in Cork.

Organised by the Biznet Cork Skillnet Business School at Cork Chamber, the seminar 'Social Media Wake Up Call', is free to all and open to anyone with a keen interest in social media.

The seminar will be chaired by Cork comedian and avid tweeter, Colm O'Regan, the author of 'Isn't it well for ye' The Book of Irish Mammies and the genius behind the tweets on @irishmammies. Other speakers include solicitor Pat Mullins, Caroline Goulding of LinkedIn and award winning communications strategist Krishna De.

"This year companies have shown a lot of interest in social media and in particular in online ethics, being aware of what you post online, how you say it in a socially responsible way, whilst maintaining your reputation online. This seminar will focus on these issues and will ask if are we aware of the implications of our social media footprint and our speakers will illustrate how it is crucial to be socially responsible and accountable online," said Training Services Manager with Cork Chamber, Norma Lynch.

Solicitor Pat Mullins of Byrne Lynch Solicitors pointed out that when using social media, people need to be aware of the legal consequences.

"Far too often, users of social media have lost the run of themselves and caused not only personal reputational damage, but exposed themselves to defamation actions. Furthermore, both employers and employees must have rules of engagement with respect to Social Media Policy.

"Employers have successfully defended terminations of employment, based on comments made by staff on their private Facebook pages. Social Media has also been used in the defence of personal injury actions, where plaintiffs have exaggerated their injuries, claiming that they can no longer do certain things, whilst posting photographs of themselves, doing that very thing, on their Facebook page," he said.

The seminar takes place in the River Lee Hotel, Cork on Tuesday, July 30 at 5pm. For more information or to book your place visit www.corkchamber.ie or email aoife@corkchamber.ie
