The first trial installation of the demountable flood barriers was undertaken in Fermoy this week, carried out by IBS Group who manufactured the system. The installation was required in order to prove that the entire system fits properly, according to Senior Resident Engineer of the Blackwater Drainage Scheme, Ger Barry.

In order to minimise disruption to road users, schools and businesses, contractors for IBS worked through the night fitting the barriers. A specialised team of engineers from the IBS Group, who have international experience in the manufacture and assembly of large-scale flood protection systems, supervised the installation. Representatives from the Officer of Public Works and TJ O’Connors and Associates, who designed the scheme, were also present.

Mr Barry confirmed that ‘the operation was successfully completed without any issues and within the allocated time’. The barriers were fully removed yesterday (Wednesday) following completion of the trial installation and returned to storage.
