The national spotlight once again turned on Fermoy this week, as RTE’s Liveline explored the topic of twinned towns on Wednesday last, highlighting the debate surrounding Fermoy’s links to Polish town, Nowa Deba.
In March, The Avondhu revealed that Nowa Deba’s municipal authority was one of a growing number in Poland to have backed a controversial resolution declaring that town to be ‘free from LGBT ideology’.
The resolution, adopted by local authorities, requires a pledge to the effect that local governments will ‘refrain from taking any action to encourage tolerance of LGBTI people’, and will ‘cease to provide financial assistance to NGOs working to promote equal rights’.
