The bags are packed, she's moved out of her house and left her job - Tessa Cornally is now preparing to travel to Peru early next month where she will live for two years working with a women's group.
The 28-year-old from Barry's Boreen, Fermoy will be in Chimbote, 420km from Lima and a world away from everyone and everything she knows and loves.
Chimbote was once a thriving fishing port, but after many years of uncensored fishing, coupled with economic disasters, the families who once lived off the fishing industry have been exiled to the outskirts of the city where they live in shacks with nothing to support themselves with.
Tessa completed her training with the volunteer group Viatores Christi last year and she will be helping women in Peru with income generating activities, early childhood projects and also support projects for women.
Tessa studied French and Maths in UCC before doing a Masters in linguistics and her fluent Spanish is what made her want to go to South America to do work that would have a very real impact on the people she is working with.
The young Fermoy woman has always been interested in volunteering and while in school, she travelled to Belarus and was in India volunteering for three months when she was in college. As well this, she is actively involved in volunteer work in Fermoy and also in Dublin where she was living.
Through her work she hopes to be able to equip the women with the tools to become self sustainable and independent.
The group that Tessa is travelling over to Peru in the name of, is Viartores Christi, and they are currently recruiting for various overseas volunteer roles, particularly medical personnel, teachers, trades people and anyone who feels that they can add something to life in these communities.
Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering with Viatores Christi can go along to Room 6 in the SMA Parish Centre in Wilton on Saturday, August 31 from 2.30pm until 4.30pm.
This Saturday, there will also be a special Mass in Fermoy at 7.30pm to wish Tessa well on her journey and assignment over the coming two years.
