Last weekend over 30 members and friends of Fermoy Rowing Club travelled to Dusseldorf, Germany to take part in the 42nd annual Rhine Marathon. Fermoy had a total of 6 boats competing with many more people travelling in support of the crews.

This year Fermoy’s senior crew of Evin Donnelly, Robert O’Callaghan, Richard Bennett and Liam Keane managed to make the trip even more special as they took home the coveted “fastest international crew” trophy with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes, placing them 12th overall.

However, that was not all the Irish crews had to offer, the men’s senior 4 of Frankie Sheridan, Rob Laird, Brian Cliffe and Adrial Harwood rowed with excellent composure to put them in first place in their category. Also in this category were the Donnellan brothers Shane, Conor, Stephen and Mike, who put in a tremendous effort to place 4th.

It was also a special year for four Fermoy juniors, twins Jack and Michael Blackburne, Greg O’Sullivan and Matty O’Reilly, who had their first international rowing experience, they were also the youngest Fermoy crew to ever take part.

Club captain Tony O’Brien thanked everyone who made the trip possible, especially trip coordinator Mike Donnellan. Club chairman Patrick Granville thanked Ruder Club Germania who so kindly welcomed them into their club yet again this year.
