Members of Fermoy Town Council are to have a site visit to see the various flood relief works that are ongoing. At their monthly meeting last week they were promised a weekly progress report from now on.
Cllr Seamus Coleman said it wasn't possible for him to attend traffic management meetings which are held in the afternoons and where traffic issues arising from the flood relief works are discussed.
"There's no doubt but that it is the issue affecting the town at present," he told the meeting. "Deadlines are being switched. It would be beneficial if someone from the OPW attended our meetings," he said. Cllr Tadhg O'Donovan said he shared some of Cllr Coleman's concerns.
Cllr Noel McCarthy said the contractors had made great strides. "Most people want to see the job done now as soon as possible," he pointed out. He commended Cllr Michael Hanley saying the traffic management committee had done great work in coming up with solutions to try to minimise traffic disruption. The contractors "have been accommodating as much as possible. I feel they have made a lot of progress. The faster the work is done the sooner the town will come back to normal," he said.
He felt the free parking would be a huge initiative. The OPW has been asked to fund the loss of parking revenue if the town council is to open its off street car parks to motorists free of charge until September to incentivise people to come into the town to shop and do business.
Cllr Michael Hanley spoke of the sheer scale of the flood relief works while Cllr John Murphy pointed out that it has been "a very tricky job. 50% of the work will never be seen, it's underground."
Mayor Olive Corcoran said she too shared Cllr Coleman's concerns, given the huge amount of taxpayers money being spent on the project. "It's more our job to concentrate on what might go wrong rather than on what has gone right to date," she said.
Their site visit has been arranged for next Monday evening.
