A picnic area on the Cork Road in Fermoy which has just had a facelift is something of a secret gem, due to a lack of signage advising motorists of the amenity area.
The picnic spot was cleaned up recently on behalf of Fermoy Tidy Towns by the local Fás team. Undergrowth was cut back, the grass cut, verges trimmed and new picnic tables, gravelled areas and fencing put in. The fencing is covered in wire, making it safe and secure from traffic for children.
Local councillors Noel McCarthy and Tadhg O'Donovan, chairman and PRO of the local Tidy Towns committee respectively, are delighted with the work that has been done there.
"It portrays a very positive image coming into the town from the Cork side and complements the planting programme completed nearby," Cllr McCarthy said. He and Cllr O'Donovan commended Fás superviser John Feeney and his team for the work done.
"It needs proper signage now so that it can be used as it isn't immediately obvious from the road. People can't use it if they don't know it's there. If locals don't know about it, we can't expect visitors to know and use it," Cllr O'Donovan said.
Both are now encouraging people to use the mini-park which has ample car parking for vehicles to pull in off the road. Children however should be accompanied by adults while there they stress, given its close proximity to the busy main road.
