"The flood relief works in Fermoy will not only be on time, they'll also be on budget." That was the assurance given by Brian Hayes, Minister of State for the OPW and Public Service Reform, during a visit to the region this week.
The good news will be welcomed by the hard-pressed business sector locally and townspeople too. There had been some fears expressed that the second phase of the major project would inevitably run over the scheduled finish time.
While the Minister didn't call to Fermoy during his visit on Tuesday to view progress, he said he'd been fully briefed by the OPW in the town. "April is very much a date that can be realised and I hope to be down again when it's completed in April," he told The Avondhu.
The Minister pointed to the OPW's goodwill gesture of allocating €45,000 to provide free parking in the town's car parks from early August to the end of December. He said people felt the flood scheme would be a huge disruption in the town and it was the OPW's way of recognising that and making it up to people.
"You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, unfortunately. This is a big win for the town and they will have their flood defences up and the town will be protected," he said.
The Minister visited Doneraile Park and inspected the flood relief works in Mallow during his visit.
