The arts festival planned for Fermoy for the start of February looks set to be even bigger than originally envisaged. That's the view of Mayor Olive Corcoran whose idea the festival is. She told The Avondhu this week that the programme is growing and that it has "gotten very big, very quickly" with a variety of different artistes coming on board.

The mayor and her committee are working hard to make the festival as inclusive as possible of all ages and sectors.

The festival of arts, music, poetry and culture will be held on the weekend of February 1 with the Community Youth Centre on Ashe Quay the location for many of the events.

A special guest has been lined up to entertain children, thanks to the efforts of committee member Marianne Harris. The red-headed moppet in the box, Bosco, beloved by legions of young television viewers throughout the late '70s and early '80s, is to visit the Youth Centre Fermoy as part of the festival on Saturday, February 1st. He's said to be staging something of a comeback nationally in recent times. Bosco will be joined in the special show by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Tickets cost €10 and are now available from Aoife and her team at Fermoy Bookshop.

The Lambert Puppet Theatre, producers of the show, is widely recognised as the premier touring puppet theatre company in Ireland and is also internationally renowned for its productions. Bosco enjoyed a very successful season at Fota Wildlife Park last summer and he's looking forward to making a return trip to Cork.

"This is a beautifully produced show with large puppets, colourful sets and exquisite lighting and is suitable for children up to ten years of age," Marianne Harris said. The mayor said: "Securing Bosco was a major coup for the Fermoy Arts Weekend committee and should prove a tremendous attraction."

Billy Murphy of the Elbow Lane Inn has offered to feature the opera 'Hansel and Gretel' on big screens at his venue as part of the festival programme.  Poetry, music, song and visual arts events are all planned for adults. Storytelling for children will feature at a number of retail outlets in the town.

Various artists have signalled their interest in taking part and a woodturning group plans to get involved. "Plans are shaping up nicely. We're also hoping to have a trade element to the weekend," Cllr. Corcoran revealed.

The date was chosen as a means of giving the town a welcome boost at what is traditionally a quiet time of year.
