Two 13 year olds, Gormfhlaith Ní Shíocháin Ní Bheoláin from Fermoy and Caoilín O’Meara from Kilworth, were among 18 performers who provided an afternoon of musical magic at the Royal Irish Academy of Music 'High Achiever Awards' Munster regional concert, which was held in the Limetree Theatre, Limerick City recently. Established in 2000, the High Achiever Awards recognise and celebrate the commitment and talents of over 42,000 students who participate in the Local Centre Examination System, run by the Royal Irish Academy of Music each year.

Taking to the stage, Caoilín and Gormfhlaith opened the concert with two pieces as a piano duet performing ‘Banjo Rag’ by Charles Drumheller and ‘The Bare Necessities’ by Terry Gilkyson.

While Gormfhlaith also performed two solo pieces later in the concert, ‘A Melancholy Improvisation’ by Aidan Duggan and Allegro from Sonata in G 16: G1: First Movement by Haydn.

NATIONAL SELECTION

Deborah Kelleher, director of the Royal Irish Academy of Music said, “The High Achiever Awards is an opportunity for students to channel their energy and focus their attention on their musical and speech and drama abilities. The opportunity to perform before a live audience helps students to build their confidence and gives them a sense of achievement and pride. It also allows them to cultivate self-expression through the unique way they connect to the audience through their performance.

“The awards are also a way of recognising the huge support given to our students by their teachers, parents, families and friends, who shared in and enjoyed this wonderful experience.”

From the Munster concert, a select number of performers will be chosen by senior examiners from the Royal Irish Academy of Music to perform in a national gala concert to take place in Dublin next month.
