All the necessary ingredients for a successful fair were in place on Tuesday last as the south Limerick village of Galbally welcomed buyers, sellers, stall holders and all manner of horsey types to this picturesque part of the country.

In the absence of any official figures, one can only gauge the market. However, significant trading did take place with some sellers being more satisfied than others. With little in the way of receipts or money back guarantees, doing business at an Irish fair can be a rough and tumble affair but on balance the system seems to work reasonably well. With heavy rain forecast for later this week, organisers were fortunate to have escaped with a dry day which helped the mood.

APPEAL

The event attracted a fine crowd and the village's shops experienced a spike in commercial activity. This type of fair appeals to all ages and school children mixed freely with senior citizens. There was lots of colour, noise and bustle during the course of the day with most business being done before noon.

Casual traders all had plenty of stock to offload and anyone who who drifts into range is deemed a potential customer. The fair does bring in its wake a substantial clean up, but those we spoke were confident the place would be 'good as new' within hours of the fair ending.
