Adam O'Brien from Conna, joined St John's Boxing Club in Fermoy last November. A talented all rounder, Adam was anxious to try his hand at the noble art - there was nothing unusual about that.
What is unusual is Adam's remarkable progress in a short few months - progress that culminated in winning an All-Ireland title at the recent boy '2' 63kg class in the National Stadium.
Having made a special presentation to Adam in recognition of his remarkable achievement, St John's boxing club head coach, Pa Flynn, was asked if it was all down to his training methods.
"I wouldn't say that, you must give all the credit to Adam, he trains hard, looks after himself well and has the makings of a technically very good fighter, he won't do too much now for a while, we'll take it fairly easy," Pa told The Avondhu. The son of Michael and Martha O'Brien, it's staggering to think that the 6 foot boxer standing before us is just 12 years of age and still attending Conna National School.
Pa made a point of thanking Michael and Martha for the support they've given Adam.
"His parents have been brilliant, it's a good spin in and out to Conna and they do it all the time," Pa said, he also acknowledged the financial backing from the club's main sponsor, Carey Tool Hire in Cork.
EXCITING TIMES
These are exciting times for St John's Boxing Club who have ambitious plans to upgrade their premises on the site of the old Eircom building in Fermoy (near Pike Road). Having secured a €25,000 grant from the Irish Amateur Boxing Association they are now in a position to completely refurbish their training quarters.
Pa believes that better facilities will lead to improved standards and his long term goal is to bring back the glory days of amateur boxing to Fermoy.
FLAG DAY JUNE 13
The public are reminded that St John's Boxing Club will hold a flag day in Fermoy on Friday, June 13.
