The joint themes of art and the environment were recognised in Clondulane National School last Friday. On the environmental front, Clondulane N.S. celebrated the raising of the school's third Green Flag. Regarding artistic endeavour, an exhibition entitled 'River Blackwater' was launched.

Local representatives in attendances to show their support for both initiatives were Cllr. Kevin O'Keeffe (Fianna Fail) and Cllr. Noel McCarthy (Labour). Kevin O'Keeffe praised Clondulane N.S. for their commitment to environmentally friendly practices. For his part, Cllr. McCarthy said pupils were leading by example when it came to protecting the world around them. He went on to say he was very impressed by the creativity on display at the exhibition.

Before the flag was raised students from the school gave a musical recital. The Green Flag Association was represented by Jane Kelleher, while pupil Adam Donegan spoke on behalf of the school's green flag committee. Liam O'Brien and Kate Moloney assisted with the flag raising. M.C. for the occasion was principal Elizabeth O'Brien.

CREATIVITY TO THE FORE

A central figure in the 'River Blackwater' exhibition was Kilworth based artist, Gillian Cussen. As a result of Gillian's influence pupils created a varied and interesting selection of sketches, drawings, mosaics and tapestries depicting the flora and fauna of the Munster Blackwater. Examples of fish life from the river were represented in model form. The school's multi-purpose hall proved to be an ideal exhibition space and considerable time and effort went in to displaying the art pieces.
