An overall investment of €785,000 is to be made in new laboratories and offices at Teagasc Moorepark in Fermoy.

Welcoming the development, Minister Seán Sherlock said these facilities, in the new Collaborative Reasearch and Innovation Centre, will provide a dedicated space for researchers employed by Glanbia Ingredients Ireland Ltd and Biostime to deliver collaborative research programmes with Teagasc.

“It will also contain an additional laboratory for general use, and a large open plan office space to house staff hired by Teagasc for the new Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC)," the Minister told The Avondhu.

"Research will take place to improve and develop a range of food ingredients, nutritional powders and cheese in Moorepark. North Cork has always been a traditional region of excellence in the area of food, and we are working to restore that tradition through investments such as this in Moorepark,” he said.

Glanbia is placing research staff at Moorepark and will also make extensive use of Moorepark’s facilities.

Biostime operate in the premium end of the Chinese infant formula market and are viewed by Enterprise Ireland as strategically important to Ireland’s dairy sector in terms of purchasing dairy ingredients, and in the long term, the possible location of a manufacturing facility in Ireland. They are looking to partner with Teagasc in a significant research programme on infant formula and plan to expand their presence in Moorepark to a team of 4-5 researchers.

“Teagasc have successfully secured funding for the DPTC at Moorepark,” stressed Minister Sherlock.

“It is being funded by Enterprise Ireland and the dairy industry and comprises 5 research pillars with Teagasc leading Pillar 3 focusing on innovating for value through dairy processing. Capital investment creates jobs and this is my priority in Government, along with my Ministerial colleagues. Fermoy received a major boost last week with the announcement of 100 jobs but this investment cements that further. Government agencies see Moorepark as a critical hub and this investment secures that hub even further.”

The new building will also be used by the 15 researchers employed by Teagasc for the Centre.
