A bit of drama is nothing new in Kilworth but Friday night last brought some real-life drama when the main ESB fuse in the entrance hall of The Village Arts Centre went on fire shortly after 7pm.

The building had just been opened for the The Palace Players’ presentation of their play, ‘Thy Will Be Done’ when the incident occurred. Front of house personnel were able to contain the fire until fire brigades from Fermoy and Mitchelstown arrived.

“It was the first time ever I have had to deal with a situation like that and I must say it was a little scary. Luckily it wasn’t a major blaze though there was a lot of smoke and I was able to contain the fire with an extinguisher,” Liam Howard, manager of the centre said.

As the electricity supply had to be disconnected to the building, Friday night’s performance had to be cancelled. However, the damage was swiftly repaired and it was ‘business as usual’ on Saturday night.

Management at The Village Arts Centre wishes to thank the fire brigade, ESB and Garda personnel for their cooperation and prompt response.

The play concludes this weekend with an extra performance on Monday night (25th) to help accommodate those who were disappointed on Friday night as well as those who were unable to gain admission on Sunday night. Booking strongly advised!
