A solidarity-through-sport movement conceived, in large part, at the sitting room table of the late Dr Tom Cavanagh in his former home on the Cork Road in Fermoy, this week took centre stage at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan.
The Sanctuary Runners, founded by Kerryman and Fermoy resident Graham Clifford, was celebrated on the other side of the world this week when on Wednesday it launched the Global Solidarity Run for 2025.
Clifford, now Head of International Development with the not-for-profit movement, was in Japan to lead the launch. At a morning running event in Osaka, in 27 degree heat and high humidity, delegates from more than 30 countries gathered to take part in the launch run on a massive wooden ring which circles the Expo venue. It is the largest wooden structure in the world.
