John Rice continued his dominance across the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association last month, winning gold in the equipped and unequipped categories at the IDFPA Deadlift Championships in Rangaskiddy.
The Fermoy native lifted a season’s best 210kg to claim the M65+ equipped category, while a lift of 190kg in the unequipped category was enough to claim a second gold medal.
Already this year, John (68) defended his equipped deadlift title at the World Championships of the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation, while he swept up seven medals and the award for the Men’s 65+ Overall Winner of the Championship at the 2016 World Throwers Club World 56lb event.
While the season is winding down for 2016, John is aiming to enter an elite class of people by deadlifting over 300kg from knee level.
“Very few people can do that,” he told The Avondhu. While dominating in powerlifting, John also brought home five Munster Athletics Championship medals from Waterford RSC recently, including gold medals in the javelin, discus and shot.
