Doneraile has been included in a new Community First Responder Group, which was officially launched in North Cork just this week by Minister Sean Sherlock.

The group will be able to respond to and treat people with a medical emergency in the Doneraile, Buttevant and Mallow areas.

This will mean that anyone who calls 999 or 112 with for example, chest pain, cardiac arrest, a stroke or choking, within a 5km range of the three towns can be reached by the Community First Responders, who will be contacted by the HSE Ambulance Control.

“This is a testament to the volunteers who are willing to give so much of their time in order to save and serve their communities. I am humbled by their dedication to help their friends and neighbours and remain available to any and all of them to help in their endeavours from here on in," Minister Sherlock said.

Scheme Coordinator, Gerard Sheehan, said that their non-profit organisation now has three defibrillators and they hope that by being local to a situation, that they can help to increase people's chances of survival.

In the three towns, Doneraile, Buttevant and Mallow, refresher training will be conducted monthly and ongoing courses will be run to re-certify existing responders or for any new members who wish to get involved.
