With a spate of graffiti tagging being noticed around Mitchelstown recently, people in the community have posed the question of whether or not Mitchelstown would benefit from a free wall - a designated place within the town for tagging and street art.

One of the most noticeable examples is above the clock on the building for Reidy's SuperValu, something which Alan Reidy told The Avondhu will be removed or covered over, but he did say that he would welcome a special area for this and even put the SuperValu car park on the cards for this.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Alan Reidy said that in the right place, graffiti or street art could be very striking, visually.

"Above our building is the wrong outlet, but as long as it's good art, there could be a place for it," he said.

One person said that if it was done in a responsible and safe manner, the art could be appreciated and channelled in the right way.

At the moment, the tagging has been seen in high areas, which are unsafe to get to, while it is also illegal and could carry heavy fines.

An art enthusiast added that if a group were to come in and work with young people in the area, street art could be incorporated into the town, as a way to brighten areas and they added that this kind of initiative could bring art out of the gallery and into the public space.
