There was an excellent attendance at a dementia information evening held in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown on Wednesday, 17th September - the event was held in conjunction with The Crystal Project - a support group for those affected by dementia.

Speakers included Dr Ciara McGlade (geriatrician, Mallow General Hospital), Amy Murphy (dementia adviser with Alzheimer Society of Ireland) and Sheena Cadoo (senior occupational therapist with HSE).

Dr McGlade explained about dementia and that there were 300 different types, but that Alzheimer's was the most common. Amy outlined the dementia services in north Cork, while Sheena spoke about how dementia patients could be supported. There was an interval where refreshments were served and following the presentations, a question and answer session took place.

Those in attendance found the forum very useful with all the information presented in an accessible manner. While a diagnosis of dementia can be very traumatic, the core message is that support, advice and practical assistance exists and people shouldn't hesitate in accessing the relevant services.

Sheena's contact is 022-58700, while Amy's mobile is 086-7812217. Another number worth noting is the Alzheimers National Helpline 1800 341 341.
