An Bord Pleanala has upheld a decision by Cork County Council to grant planning permission for a fish farm on a 0.5 hectare site in Kilworth.

The county council's decision to grant planning in November last year for the fish farm, comprising 20 tanks and a river water lift station at the river Araglin along with associated works, at Macroney Lower, Kilworth, was appealed by a  couple from Ballyderown, Kilworth.

In granting permission, the planning appeals board were obliged under the planning and development acts to consider the EU Habitats Directive, The EC birds and natural habitats regulations, the Cork County Development Plan and the nature, scale and location of the works as well as the pattern of development in the area.

It attached nine conditions to permission, stating that subject to compliance with the conditions set out, the proposed development wouldn't adversely affect the environment and wouldn't seriously injure the amenities of the area and would, therefore, be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
