Cycling stardom beckons for O’Brien with Lidl-Trek development team

At just 18 years old, Liam O’Brien is moving fast through the ranks in his chosen sport and has this week been named among eight cyclists from across the world for the development squad set up by the Lidl-Trek WorldTour team.

The Fermoy teenager is among the first batch of riders announced for the professional team and according to Eddie, Liam’s father, it is a big step for the youngster, who has spent the past year honing in on his cycling skills and developing in the sport.

“It’s very hard to get up to this level. There are so many young fellas in Europe that want to get to this level. You’re up against beating people that would have come from cycling pedigree. For Liam to get picked as one of those riders, it’s the next step for Liam,” Eddie said.
