Teachers and pupils at Bishop Murphy National School in Fermoy are enthusiastic supporters of a cycle safety initiative being promoted by Cork County Council and Cork Sports Partnership.
Under this enlightened scheme, students receive expert tuition on how to cycle safely in public. Instructor John Clancy has been a regular visitor to the school over the last 6 weeks and he's full of praise for the young students.
"They're certainly very keen and eager to learn, it's all about being alert to potential dangers and adopting good cycling practices" John says.
John's spacious van transports the bikes and helmets to participating schools. The boys in Bishop Murphy are especially fortunate in that they have access to a smooth and spacious tarmacadam area where the boys carry out a variety of manoeuvres. Control of your bike, the sensible application of brakes, negotiating corners, being well lit up and sensible cycling are just of the areas covered.
While our infrastructure and climate aren't conducive to year-round cycling, there's no doubt that the trusty bicycle remains a firm favourite with boys and girls. From the perspective of those promoting the safe cycling scheme there's the added bonus that cycling is a great keep fit option as well as being the world's most environmentally friendly mode of transport.
At the completion of their course, Bishop Murphy NS can lay claim to having cyclists who are safe, responsible and extremely fit.
