Cultural Companions link up to enjoy events

How many times have you heard it said “I’d go but I’ve no-one to go with”? The people behind the initiative ‘Cultural Companions’, know that many people would probably go to a lot more plays, films, shows, concerts, exhibitions and other events if they had someone to go with. There’s a thriving social and arts scene to be enjoyed if people had the know-how, the transport and the shared interest to get them going. That’s where ‘Cultural Companions’ comes in.

The aim is to provide increased opportunities for older people to engage in Ireland’s vibrant cultural and arts scene. The programme was established in Dublin and Cork in the first year, however the Cork project hasn’t been developed as much as the one in Dublin.

The organisers, Age & Opportunity, are interested in meeting up with people in Fermoy who’d consider helping to establish the programme again and facilitate a local network that might develop into a countywide programme over time. To that end, Ciarán McKinney will give a short presentation on the initiative during Fermoy Friendship Week on March 21st. Hosted by Fermoy Men’s Club, it will be held in the Community Youth Centre on Ashe Quay at 12 o’clock. All are welcome.
