It was a close call on Saturday night at the big switch-on of the Christmas lights in New Market Square in Mitchelstown, as that devious Grinch tried his hardest to ruin the evening by snatching the big moment from local lady, Claudia Matassa in an attempt to take all the glory himself!

Happily, Mrs Claus has been in contact with The Avondhu to report that both she and her husband, Santa, were delighted with the conduct of master of ceremonies, Martin Lane, who courageously chased the green menace and helped him see that the Christmas spirit was alive and well in Mitchelstown.

She also told The Avondhu how pleased she was with the children in town, where just under 100 of the town’s smallest citizens took part in a treasure hunt to meet her and her elves in the library building.
