‘Special recognition’ for local students

One would be forgiven for thinking there had been a natural disaster in Glenahulla on Friday morning (26th), as the South Eastern Mountain Association (SEMRA), the Gardaí and the National Ambulance Service were all parked up outside of the local national school.

However, the various teams were there for a very special occasion; to celebrate the ‘bravery and courage’ of Luke and Bobby Walsh, pupils at the local school, and their friends from Kildorrery NS, Ciarán and Joe Gallagher. The boys were instrumental in the rescue of Evan Mahon from Lismore, who had suffered a head injury on the mountain bike trails in Ballyhoura back in November.

Niamh Brosnan and Esther Stokes from Bruff Garda Station were there, as were SEMRA reps Liz Browne and Chris Piers and both Pat McCarthy and Ger O’Dea from the National Ambulance Service.

Mr Mahon, for his part, thanked the boys wholeheartedly too, saying that he wasn’t sure that, at their age, he would have been so calm in such a situation. He had suffered a head injury on the cycle trails and, as is the nature, had been adamant about cycling on and, in a ‘worst case scenario, would have driven home’.
