IJKA World Secretary Brian Toomey has welcomed the recent announcement that Ireland will host the 2017 World Karate Championships and World Wheelchair Karate Championships. The championships will be held in the Mardyke Arena in Cork City from July 6th to 9th.

The news follows the success of the Irish team at this year’s IJKA World Karate Championships in Istanbul, Turkey where a 35-person team returned with a total of 77 medals. Prior to this, at the 2014 World Championships in Poznan, Poland a 57-person team won 88 medals.

Announcing Ireland’s selection as hosts, Shihan Brian Toomey 7th Dan, from Fermoy Karate Club, said he is confident that the championships will be a major success in Ireland, who hosted the European Championships in both 1999 and 2003. Many of those who competed in these competitions returned to Ireland for holidays following the hospitality they were shown.

“I remember that following the European Championships in 2003 they organised a sea fishing trip for the Hungarian team, who, as their country is land locked, had never been on the sea before, so they were delighted with this, and hopefully we can make the trip to Ireland memorable for many more countries in 2017,” he said.

There will be an international seminar on July 6th and 7th 2017, with IJKA World Chief Instructor, Hanshi Sadashige Kato 9th Dan and other top Japanese and European instructors, and the championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 8th and 9th.

There will be individual and team events for competitors from under 12 to over 60. The wheelchair championships will have events for wheelchair competitors and non-wheelchair users with disabilities.

PREPARATIONS BEGIN

“The cost of hosting the championships will be in the region of €25,000 so we will now begin looking for the support of sponsors and government and other agencies. We would appreciate any help we can get with this,” Mr Toomey added.

In attendance at the launch day were Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Chris O’Leary, Michael McGrath TD, Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe, Cllr Marcia Dalton and Cllr Michael Murphy, who congratulated the Irish team on their success at the recent World Championships in Turkey, and pledged their support for the organisation of the 2017 championships in Cork.
