What better way for a music college to celebrate its 25th anniversary than with a gala concert? Cork City Music College is doing just that, with what promises to be a real musical treat on Saturday, May 25 at 8pm. The venue for the event is Triskel Christchurch.
The college, which draws students from throughout north Cork, has made a substantial contribution to cultural life in the city and county since it opened its doors in 1987 through its comprehensive range of music education for both children and adults. The not-for-profit organisation is a registered charity with staff dedicated to encouraging, developing and instilling a fulfilling and lifelong love of music in its 600 students.
Summing up the ethos of the college and the significance of the 25th anniversary celebration concert, school principal Shena Shortall said: “The staff and students at CCMC are extremely excited to have reached the quarter of a century landmark. We are proud to say that our college is developing year by year and that we are going from strength to strength. We warmly welcome students of all ages and standards from a variety of backgrounds. Hence our programme for our 25th anniversary concert on May 25 is a celebration of a variety of musical styles. The sumptuous surroundings of Triskel Christchurch is the perfect venue for our biggest musical celebration to date. We encourage everybody to please come along and support our CCMC musicians. They won’t be disappointed.”
The concert programme, conducted by Kay O’Sullivan, features a variety of orchestral pieces to be performed by the CCMC orchestra, including Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’ and Micheal Ó Suilleabhain’s ‘So Merrily Dance’. The programme is designed to showcase the talent of many of Cork’s young, diverse and talented musicians along with several well known and established soloists.
Master of Ceremonies for the night is none other than Cork’s own John Spillane who will perform a few select pieces of his own.
“I’m thrilled to be part of CCMC’s 25th anniversary celebrations and to give any support I can to the up- and-coming, talented musicians of Cork city and county. It promises to be a fantastic night with something in the programme for everyone,” he said.
Cork-based tenor Robert Craig, counter tenor Nicholas McMurray and soprano Aine Whelan will be among the guest artists featuring and female vocal trio ‘Swingabella’ will make their Cork début. CCMC’s flautists Louise Sheehan and Shena Shortall will perform the beautifully intricate piece ‘Fantaisie’ from Rigoletto. To round off the special concert an original music treat is planned: the CCMC orchestra performing ‘Intermezzo’ from Cavalleria Rusticana as well as excerpts from the popular television show ‘Glee’.
Tickets for the musical extravaganza are priced at just €10 for adults and €5 for senior citizens and children. For tickets call 021-4313211 or email info@ccmc.ie
