The Corbett Court’s bargain breakfast has proved a phenomenal success with the Kilworth restaurant serving an average 500 breakfasts each morning and around 800 being served each morning in their Charleville restaurant, according to owner Declan Corbett.
In fact he says the special offer has proved so successful that he’s taken on 10 extra staff between the two restaurants to cope with the demand.
During a discussion on Joe Duffy’s Liveline programme on RTE on Thursday last about businesses hiring extra staff, Declan Corbett told how his €5 full Irish has been so popular that he had to take on extra staff to keep up. He explained that the drop in the VAT rate for a range of services connected to the hospitality and tourism sectors from 13.5% to 9% which came into effect from July 1st had helped, allowing him to pass on the savings to customers by way of the cheaper breakfasts. The rate drop is part of the jobs initiative which the Government hopes will help to stimulate the struggling sectors. The reduction will stay in place until December 2013, when it will be reviewed.
While it means a low profit margin, Declan feels his bargain breakfasts are worth it to stimulate business. It brings in people who might not otherwise frequent the restaurants, he points out and, if they like the food and the service, they may well make a return visit for lunch or an evening meal.
Even before being discussed on the national airwaves last week, word of the bargain full Irish, which includes two rashers, two sausages, two pieces of pudding, beans, an egg, tomato, mushrooms and two pieces of toast with tea or coffee and is served from 8am to 12noon daily, was getting plenty of attention, being mentioned on Trip Advisor, recommended on Twitter and being discussed on Boards.ie. It was intended to run the offer only up until this month but Declan told The Avondhu this week that such is the success of the promotion, they plan to continue it.
