There will be some changes to the constituencies for the next general election, as the Electoral Commission’s review of the constituency boundaries this week has recommended the number of TDs increase nationally from 160 to 174.

Other boundary decisions as part of the review will now mean changes for voters in the communities of Doneraile and Mallow, as well as for voters in Tipperary. The constituencies of Limerick County and Waterford, however, remain unchanged, with three and four TDs respectively.

With the national population at slightly over five million people, the revised 174 TDs will mean one representative for every 29,593 people – currently this figure stands at 32,182 based on 160 TDs. The changes are deemed necessary to allow for an 8% increase in the population since 2016.
