A great night of enjoyment and poker at The Fisherman’s Rest in Conna on Friday night last.

Over sixty players attended and many more came to watch and help with the running of the event in combination with Frances and Oliver Twomey. Conna Community Council needs funding to complete many of its projects and continue to maintain its services to the community. This night was a great step forward. We made a good sum of money which is what we wanted to do.

Michael Sexton ran the poker classic for us, he did his job very well and everyone was pleased with the manner in which the games were organised. There was a great energy about the event and those of us who never turn a card were delighted to see the many really astute players concentrating on their game. It was a treat to see the way everyone played with conviction and no cross words.

It was a winner for everyone: the many sponsors who were so good to us included:

Tanner Brothers, Conna; Sean and Mary Cotter; Higgins & McCarthy Construction, Conna; The Torten, Fermoy; Enzo’s, Fermoy; Centra, Fermoy; Barnes Jewellers, Fermoy; SuperValu, Fermoy; Eoin O’Keeffe Architects, Conna and Brendan Noonan, Ballymurphy.

The winners were:

First prize: Ger Carey, Bruree; 2nd: Gene Wims, Mitchelstown; 3rd: Tom Hedderman, Bruree, 4th: Patsy Lane, Conna, 5th: Eva Whelan, Charleville, 6th: Jack Foley, Donoghmore, 7th: Berry Reighter, Conna and 8th: Davy O’Regan.

Food kindly sponsored by Big Vinnies, Conna and The Fisherman’s Rest, Conna.

A big thank you to all who played and supported us in any way. We are delighted with your support which will progress the work of the community; to Frances and Oliver Twomey firstly for thinking of the poker classic, and then for the support given on and before the event; The Avondhu for the exposure they gave the event apart from commercial advertising, they brought the news of the event to the wider public. We appreciate their efforts.

Indeed to all of the media in the North and East Cork area we are delighted with the coverage given. A special word of thanks to our own Lorna McDonald, she designed the poster which was favourably commented on by all who saw it.
