Avondhu Blackwater Community Connect staff member, Mary Kearney was involved in a real life 'Lassie' story this week! Mary, who is an operator on the befriending service that targets elderly isolation, was on her way home from work when a collie she didn’t recognise began to follow her.
She explained: “I pulled in home and she followed me up the drive. She was even standing up with her paws on the kitchen window ledge looking in! Later when I went to leave with my daughter, she was yelping and jumping up on us so I thought: she’s not going away!”
Mary continues: “Laura, a former staff member of the Community Connect, is very involved in animal rescue and a lot of her communication is done through word of mouth on Facebook, so I thought I’d do the same. I posted a picture of the dog with a notice and sure enough someone came forward to claim her!”
It turns out the collie’s home is five miles from where Mary lives. Her family came immediately to collect her. “The owner's children were overjoyed to see her, but mine ended up with long faces, as she’d really grown on them!” Mary explained.
The tale gave Mary a story to tell her callers this week. “We call hundreds of people every week in a bid to tackle rural isolation and stories like mine keep the participants very entertained as they love a good old story, where it all comes good in the end!”
