Students in Coláiste an Chraoibhín in Fermoy have been busy during the past few months with the Sky Sports Living for Sport project, during which they organised and completed the 5km Coláiste Cool Runners Run/Walk.

25 students from the school took part in the project, which is a free schools initiative that uses sports stars and sports skills to help motive and inspire young people.

As part of the project, the school was assigned an athlete mentor, Cork hurler Stephen McDonnell. The Glen Rovers star met with the student leaders and talked about the challenges he has faced and the role sports plays in his life.

Other mentors around Ireland include Darren O’Sullivan, Jessie Barr, Katie Taylor, Lorcán McLoughlin and rugby player Jenny Murphy, while international mentors include David Beckham and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Participating schools choose a sport and then set about organising a school event relating to it. Last month, the students in Coláiste completed the 5km Coláiste Cool Runners Run/Walk, as well as helping to plan, prepare and assist in the promotion of the event.
