Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Fermoy 22 — Doneraile 4
Our 1st year girls completed their first ever competitive basketball match with a win against Doneraile.
Although there were nerves in the beginning, the longer the game progressed the better the girls played. The opening quarter left us 4-0 up with Chloe Flynn and Fiona Healy getting our scores.
Katie Scollard began the second brightly who along with Nodhlaig McCarthy and Alana Ahern added to our tally leaving us 10-0 to the good.
Annelies Kouwenberg was always in the thick of the action and got her rightly deserved score. 4 excellent points from Aine Hurley left us in control of the game by the end of the third quarter but not before Alana added another basket.
Nodhlaig and Fiona finished out the game to leave the final score 22-4 in our favour. An excellent display from our girls with 7 different scorers. Even more impressive was our defense, giving away only 2 baskets throughout.
Instrumental in this was Bronagh Wiley, Isabelle Hunter O’Brien, Elisa Fenton, Asta Lukoseviciute and Aine O’Mahony who did not stop running from the first whistle.
2nd Year Girls
Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Fermoy 22 — Doneraile 2
Having only taken up basketball a year ago it is great to see the strides forward this group has taken under coach Mr Gibbons. We began the game brightly with our defense working hard to limit opportunities for the opposition.
We were getting into good shooting positions, which allowed Paulina Wlodowska to come away with two well-taken baskets in the first quarter.
Nikola Biedron gave us the perfect start in the second with a fine score, soon followed by the impressive Niamh Sheehan who was right up there for player of the match. Not wanting to be outdone Hannah Healy added 4 more points before the half time whistle.
Our workrate told its own story with the opposition finding it hard get a foothold in the game. Paige Gibbard grabbed another fine basket to now make 14-2 entering final quarter.
Nikola added two more baskets soon followed by Leanne Loftus and Caitlyn Gallagher to leave the final score 22-2.
A very encouraging display by our girls all made possible by their determination and willingness to put in the hard yards. Sinead O’Callaghan was her usual impressive self, controlling the attack with Cliona Collins, Amy O’Connell and Aine Daly being influential in defense.
