Four students from Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Fermoy represented their school at the F1 in Schools Ireland competition this month at the University of Limerick. Conor Healy, Dara Murphy Young, Andrew Hill and Krystian Winkler formed team Sabre F1 as they competed against schools from across Munster.

As part of the competition, the team manufactured a scaled model of a Formula 1 car, where they are raced head to head on a straight 20-metre track. The students use the most up to date technologies when creating their car. The team must then present their design to a panel of judges.

The competition comprises of many different elements. The students are encouraged to develop their own team and brand. As with any real Formula 1 team, they must develop and market this plan. They are responsible for getting their team sponsored, creating a team logo, and getting the school excited in their team.

This year, the team benefited from the support of Fermoy Print and Design and Bank of Ireland. These local businesses funded the team to contest in this event. While the team performed well on the day, they did not progress to the national finals.

School principal Christy Healy, explained how beneficial such events can be to students. “I witness how the students grow in confidence through such events. Over the past three years, the school has been represented in this competition.

“We love to facilitate students who are especially focused and driven, and this competition is tailored for students who are ambitious in the areas of engineering and technology,” he said.
