Avid soccer fans from all over the country will recognise the Moulson name, but many will not know that George and Con Moulson grew up in Clogheen, County Tipperary and this year, Clogheen will be celebrating that connection with their Gathering event.
Con and George’s father, Charles served in the British Army in Kildare before a job as postman took him to the South Tipperary village of Clogheen, where they lived in a house near the pedestrian crossing. During the village’s Gathering event, to be held between August 23-26, FAI chief executive John Delaney will unveil a plaque there in the Moulson’s memory, with members of the Moulson family set to travel over from England.
Councillor Marie Murphy outlined that this connection only came to light in recent years and they thought that the year of The Gathering was the ideal opportunity to recognise the Moulson connection to Clogheen. While one of the event organisers told The Avondhu that the 1911 Census shows that both Con and George went to school in Clogheen.
CUP FINAL RECREATION
Con Moulson was captain of the Republic of Ireland team in 1936 and 1937, while George was a goalkeeper and had three caps in 1948. George also played in the cup final in 1939 in Old Trafford and for The Gathering, a team from Grimsby in North England will play against a local team in a recreation of that cup final game. Many of Con and George’s relatives are currently living in Grimsby.
Con and George’s father, Charles actually re-enlisted into World War I and sadly died shortly after – his name can now be seen amongst the fallen on the cross monument in Cahir and while his ancestors are in Cahir, they will visit the monument and place a wreath there in his memory. They will also do a tour of The Vee, enjoy other local attractions and soak up a social evening in Clogheen.
