Councillor Kevin O'Keeffe has asked Cork County Council to again call on the National Roads Authority (NRA) to lift their embargo and install speed ramps where speed restrictions are already in place, such as in Glenahulla and Kildorrery village.
Citing an example from his own driving experiences, Cllr O'Keeffe said that he was approaching Glenahulla where there is a speed radar and he saw a vehicle drive by, showing a speed of 85km in a 50km zone on the radar.
"You can have all the gimmicks, but without traffic calming measures like speed ramps, people driving will give us the two fingers," the councillor said, at this week's meeting of the Fermoy Electoral Area Committee.
Engineer Brendan O'Gorman argued that speed radars are effective, noting that whenever he has driven through Glenahulla, he has seen between 80% and 90% compliance with the speed limits.
He added that after a speed radar is taken away, it would always be the favourable option to put in a traffic calming measure to slow down the traffic, but that the NRA are not funding these any more.
SUPPORT
There was support from Cllr Pa O'Driscoll to bring the issue before full council and it was suggested by the senior executive engineer that the phrasing of the motion be changed from reading 'speed restrictions' to 'speed limit zones'.
Cllr Noel McCarthy added that in Fermoy, there is a pedestrian crossing and ramp outside the Post Office, but because it is not raised up enough, it can cause problems for both motorists and pedestrians, as cars sometimes don't slow down enough.
