Siblings Gearoid O’Sullivan, Orla Dolan and Eoghan O’Sullivan are running the NYC Marathon in memory of their late father, on Nov 3 to raise money for the charity he founded, Cork Cancer Research Centre.

Siblings Orla Dolan, Gearoid O'Sullivan and Eoghan O'Sullivan are running all 26 miles of the New York City Marathon in memory of their late father Professor Gerald O'Sullivan on November 3 to raise money for the charity he founded, Cork Cancer Research Centre.

The late ‘Gerry O’, as he was fondly known, was a pioneer in the development of new cancer treatments and founded the world renowned cancer research centre in 1999 which he directed and led until his passing on February 12th 2012. Two of his children, Orla and Eoghan, now carry on his legacy by working in a fundraising capacity for Breakthrough Cancer Research, which funds Cork Cancer Research Centre.

Commenting on the fact that all 3 siblings are running the NYC Marathon in his honour, Orla Dolan said that both as a surgeon and a cancer research pioneer, their father impacted on so many lives.

"We are often overcome by meeting so many people he personally saved and returned to their families. Dad faced the world with optimism, drive, passion and enough energy to power the national grid. We will need all of those traits to complete the NYC Marathon on Nov 3rd but will dedicate the steps, miles and blisters to him. Every penny we raise will go into the development of new cancer treatments for poor prognosis treatments at the Centre he founded.”

Breakthrough Cancer Research focuses on funding new treatment opportunities that are being developed at Cork Cancer Research Centre. Research programmes funded by Breakthrough Cancer Research must focus on translating lab discoveries into new treatment opportunities. To this end they work closely with clinicians in practice all over Ireland so that their research is targeted at finding new options for poor prognosis and incurable cancers. Their main focus is the development of new treatments for cancer that do not currently respond to conventional therapies.

The New York City Marathon is one of the world’s largest and features a challenging course which winds through the five boroughs of New York City. Beginning on Staten Island, runners pass through Brooklyn, Long Island and Queens before heading into Manhattan, passing through Harlem, down Fifth Avenue and into Central Park where the runners cross the finish line outside Tavern on the Green - tired but triumphant.
