On Friday, March 14th, as pupils in the CBS Primary in Mitchelstown geared up for St Patrick's Day and the weekend ahead, colour and creativity were the order of the day with all getting into the spirit of the La Glas (Green Day).
Wigs in green, white and gold, faces painted and boys dressed in green, from head to toe, could have been seen making their way to school on Friday morning. Irish coordinator, Ber O'Sullivan, explained that the La Glas is just one of the many initiatives they have to promote Irish language and culture within the school.
A LIVING LANGUAGE
Each week, common phrases and expressions 'as Gaeilge' are circulated to the classes and on alternate Fridays, one pupil from each class is awarded for making an extra effort to use Irish. The school also embraces the idea of a print rich environment and there are many posters and phrases to be seen in Irish on the walls.
This year, another novel idea was put into the mix with a lunchtime treat. In the fortnight leading up to St Patrick's Day, each child opened their lunchbox to find a card with a 'seanfhocail', otherwise known as a wise old saying.
Pupils were also given extra fun activities, such as games, crosswords and puzzles in Irish.
"This is an attempt to take the drudgery out of Irish and to forge an association in the minds of the children between their native tongue and enjoyment. All of these initiatives facilitate the development of Irish as a living language," Irish coordinator, Ber O'Sullivan told The Avondhu.
