Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe, who said a level-playing field is needed between casual traders and local businesses to avoid unfair competition.

New by-laws that will attempt to control casual trading in towns are currently being prepared by Cork County Council – following concerns that businesses are being negatively affected by a lack of regulations.

The issue was raised most recently by Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe at the last Fermoy Municipal Authority meeting, who said a level-playing field is needed between casual traders and local businesses to avoid unfair competition.

Cllr O’Keeffe called on the council to provide an up-to-date report on the Casual Trading By-laws applicable to the County and whether supervision is provided where such trading occurs, for instance at New Square in Mitchelstown.
