One of the casual traders who has been trading in New Square, Mitchelstown on Saturdays has announced that he will no longer trade in the square at weekends while another said she is 'unsure as to the future'.
The traders – Mossy’s Fruit and Veg and The Flowerbox, made the announcements through their Facebook accounts after an article appeared in The Avondhu last week when Mitchelstown Business Association (MBA) queried the legality of casual traders operating in the town’s square outside of Thursdays.
The MBA, who believe it is unfair on businesses who have to pay rates and public liability insurance, having to compete against traders with little or no overheads, have written to Cork County Council asking them to clarify the matter.
