Burst main on bridge could have proved fatal

Just as the shops closed in Fermoy on Monday night, traffic in the town was thrown into disarray when a water main burst on Kent Bridge.

Described as ‘being like a geyser’ with water towering into the air, it was lucky that nobody was hurt as a result.

Kent Bridge was inaccessible for a time due to flooding and a number of homes, schools and businesses were left without water.

Local man William Hughes, described it as being ‘like a geyser’ while another local, Joe Tobin, said that it was lucky that there were no pedestrians walking near where the burst occurred. “If you were walking on that when the pipe exploded, you’d be inside the Blackwater,” he said.
