Cork to Cobh Run

The annual Cork to Cobh 15 mile run took place on Sunday, October 2nd. This popular race is used by many people as preparation for the Dublin City Marathon and over 700 athletes took part on the day.

Amongst them were two of Blackwater Triathlon Club’s finest, Eddie O’Brien and Adam Blaiklock. Weather conditions on the day were perfect for running as the runners headed out from Cork City along the dual carriageway out to the Dunkettle roundabout.

From there the route took them out along the Glounthane road towards Cobh. The first 11 miles were quite flat with a series of climbs up to the 14 and a half mile mark. The race finished with a downhill stretch into Cobh itself where a huge crowd of onlookers waited to cheer on the runners across the line.

Eddie finished in a very impressive time of 1:38.48 with Adam crossing the line in 1:56.46. Well done to both Adam and Eddie and all the other runners who took part on the day. As usual it was a very well organised and marshalled race and a credit to the organisers.

Winter Training

As another successful triathlon season draws to a close we are preparing the winter training schedule for our club members. A comprehensive winter training regime allows triathletes to prepare as well as possible for the next year’s triathlons. As part of the Blackwater triathlon Club’s commitment to training we have a number of activities planned for the winter months.

Amongst the planned activities are swimming sessions, turbo training sessions, running workshops, core training sessions and weekend cycles.

The Turbo training sessions began on Tuesday, 4th of October. Thursday swimming sessions began again on Thursday, 29th of September.

The first of the running workshops was held on Sunday morning last when 8 club members attended a Pose running workshop given by Blackwater Triathlon Club member Ed Bates.

Ed, who is a chiropractor based in Kilworth and a veteran of many triathlons, has recently started running clinics based on the Pose running methodology.

As a result of his personal experience running long distances, and suffering from various injuries as a result, he decided to see if there was a better way of running out there. As he says, “running is something that is practiced, but never taught!”

The Pose Method was created in the 1970s by Dr Nicholas Romanov, a two-time Olympic coach and world – renowned sports scientist – to teach all runners from the elite to the complete novice, how to run properly. The club decided that we would like to give this a go and members were invited to a talk last Friday evening in the Adair Hall in Fermoy, where Ed explained the basic principles involved.

There was a very good response to this and a large number of members will be taking part in a series of half day workshops over the coming months. As mentioned the first took place last Sunday and involved theory sessions followed by various drills and video analysis of the participants’ current running styles.

Feedback from the first session was very positive and further workshops will be taking place over the coming weeks.

One of the basic requirements for success in any sport is core strength and the club is also arranging a series of Core Conditioning sessions for members starting on Monday the 17th of October at 6.45 pm in the Adair Hall.

These will be run by Deirdre Morrison. The session will be for about 1 hr. For these sessions you will need to bring your own mat and foam roller. There will be no mats or foam roller available on the night. All other equipment for the sessions will be provided on the night. The session will be run in a block of 10 nights, finishing on the 19th of December and will be limited to 12 people. Depending on the success of the first block of classes we will then hope to run another block of 10 nights in January.
