Bishop William Crean of Cloyne thanked Ian Elliot and the members of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC) for their support and guidance in helping the Cloyne Diocese to herald a new dawn in safeguarding children in Church activities. Speaking at a reception for parish safeguarding representatives in the Silversprings Hotel, Cork, he highly commended the work of the Cloyne Diocesan Safeguarding Committee, singling out for particular praise the ever vigilant work of its chairman, Con Lynch of Macroom and its untiring secretary, Rosarie O'Riordan of Grenagh.

Referring to Ian Elliot's expression of congratulations and praise of the standard of child protection in Cloyne, Bishop Crean wished Ian Elliot every success in his retirement as chairperson of the NBSCCC. In a recent audit, the HSE commended Cloyne Diocese in its implementation of all standards of child protection as outlined in its document Children First (2011).

Speaking of the importance of safeguarding children in parish activities, Bishop Crean said: "I wish to reaffirm my commitment to ensuring that the standards of best practice are implemented to the full in every parish of the Diocese. To this end, I appeal to all personnel involved in executing the seven standards, to implement, uphold and rigorously re-check that all the requirements, as set out by the NBSCCC, are fulfilled in every parish."

Bishop Crean presented 150 parish safeguarding representatives with certification from the NBSCCC on completing a course of training in child protection matters. Each of the 46 parishes in the Cloyne Diocese has a trained representative to oversee the standards and expectations of the HSE and the NBSCCC. The event facilitated the launch of the Cloyne Diocesan Safeguarding website (www. safeguardingchildrencloyne.ie) which contains many resources and forms for all child-related activity in parishes.

The second issue of the Cloyne Safeguarding Newsletter was distributed to all parishes for circulation to the homes. This issue contains much positive news on the standard of safeguarding children within the Diocese including the procedure for reporting of any concerns any person may have in relation to child abuse.
