The remains of William 'Bill' Fennessy, Glenabo, Fermoy who was last seen alive on March 30, 1990 were finally laid to rest in his native Ballyduff on Saturday where a large and representative crowd gathered to pay their respects to his wife Noreen, sons John and Liam, daughters Mary, Norma and Geraldine, his brothers Paddy, Thomas, Michael and Jimmy and sisters Eileen and Esther.
Following years of investigation and speculation, Mr Fennessy's remains were accidentally discovered by members of the Fermoy Sub Aqua Club Search and Rescue team during a routine dive in the Blackwater river in a spot quite close to the town centre last October. However, it wasn't until quite recently that Gardai finally confirmed that the remains found in a submerged car were those of the former 54 year old businessman and politician.
Mr Fennessy's baffling disappearance in the spring of 1990, made national news and weeklong searches over land and water failed to throw up even the slightest clue. Few would have believed that if and when Mr Fennessy's body was discovered that it would have happened so close to Fermoy town. What is not known is at what location the car entered the river.
When found, the car, a Daihatsu Charade, was embedded in thick silt close to the northern bank of the river upstream from the bridge opposite Fermoy Rowing Club. The confirmation and subsequent burial at the weekend, brings to an end, almost 23 years of speculation as to Mr Fennessy's disappearance.
To his wife and family we extend our sincere sympathy.
