Biggest night of the school year in St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown

St Fanahan’s College in Mitchelstown recently held it’s biggest night of the school year – the annual awards night.

St Fanahan's College, Mitchelstown held it annual awards night on Thursday last, May 14.

The school took the opportunity to recognise the students for their fantastic achievements with principal, Mr Long saying ‘we are extremely proud of our entire student body and we wish to congratulate all the recipients and wish them the very best going forward’.

This year the school excelled in sport, reaching three county finals in hurling and football. All teams trained hard throughout the year with great numbers attending after school training each evening of the week. Christopher Noonan from Mitchelstown received the Male sports Award for his outstanding contribution and leadership skills while Tara O'Gorman (Kildorrery) received the Female Sports Award for her amazing skill and her fantastic achievement of being on the Irish Soccer Team.

The school is going from strength to strength in the world of academia. Corrinna Rath and Dawn Murphy received Cork ETB Awards for their outstanding results in last year’s State Examinations while Jack Norris (Mitchelstown) was awarded the Sixth Year Student of the Year. Jack is a conscientious student with a pleasant demeanour who is presently preparing for his exams in June.

Mary Barrett (Skeheenarinky) and Sean Browne (Mitchelstown) received the First Year Student of the Year Awards. Mr Walsh commented that Mary Barrett is a well rounded diligent student who always strives to reach the next level. He also said that Sean Browne is ‘a model student who is highly regarded by staff and students alike’.

Ciara Heenan (Kilbehenny) was a worthy recipient for the Second year Award as Year Head. Ms Helena Hennessy commented that her dedication to her school work made her a worthy recipient.

Ms Hennessy also pointed out that ‘she is an inspiration to the other students’. Claire Long is the worthy Third year Recipient of Student of the Year. Her hard work and dedication to her studies have help her to excel.

“Claire is a very popular student among her peers, and adds greatly to the learning experience within the classroom.”

Clara King (Ballyporeen) was presented with two awards, the first for amazing Junior Cert Results in September 2014 and the second for being chosen as TY Student of the Year. A willing and very able candidate in both curricular and extra curricular areas. She has been described as ‘a joy to work with as a student’. Clara was preparing for the TY's Irish concert which took place on Friday, May 15. She had co-written as well as playing a staring role in a ‘Fr Ted (as gaeilge) sketch’.

Damien Curran (Glanworth) received Fifth Year Student of the Year for his positive contribution to the learning environment of the fifth years and is regarded as a very pleasant student. Shania Williams (Ballyporeen) received the LCA Student of the Year Award, while Ketrin Lakatos , the LCA Special Recognition Award.

Leanne Mullane was rewarded with this years ‘Principals Award’. Leanne is a very hard working student and is focused on achieving her goal in her Leaving Cert. After completing a science course in UCC recently, she was described by the UCC lecturers as ‘a great ambassador for the school’. Leanne hopes to go on to third level to study science and the school wish her all the best with her endeavours.

Andrew Macken (Ballyporeen) received this years Parents Council Award for his outstanding contribution to the school this academic year. He embraced the ethos of Transition Year with open arms. Andrew was highly involved in the recent ‘Cycle Against Suicide Campaign ‘ that visited the school. He also was involved in the inaugural ‘Green Schools Committee’. He always does the ‘Sound System’ for any events within the school including the annual ‘Fame’ concert.

Eoin Allen got this years ‘Artists Award’ and ‘Leon Craven obtained the performance award. Ms Dillon said on that Leon has ‘talent beyond his years’.

School Attendance Awards went to Julia Curtin (1st Year), Amy McDonnell (1st Year), Alan Walsh (1st year), Zoe Hassall (Fourth Year) and Stephen Roche (3rd Year).

• Tara O'Gorman - Irish Soccer Team

• Molly O'Sullivan and Niamh Curtin - Winners of Calor Gas Cooking Competition

• Benny Healy - Irish Shotput U15 National Record Holder

• Mary Barrett - Tipperary Soccer Team ‘Marys talent is obvious for all to see” (Mr Walsh)

• Chloe Cleary - Limerick Football Team “shows maturity beyond her years both on and off the field” (Mr Walsh)

• Sinead Casey - Cake Decorating

• David Beginsky - Creative Writing a finalist in the ‘Eason's Creates’ Competition

• School Debating Team which took part in the Munster Matheson Mace Debating Competition:
