Without fanfare, Bernie Stack closed the door on his MacCurtain Street shop in Fermoy for the last time in the recent weeks.

This was possibly a closure largely unnoticed by those who did not frequent the shop selling everything one could need in terms of equine and animal supplements, feedstuffs and general supplies.

Another sole trader closing their door is not unusual in the modern world, but the service provided by Bernie over the years is far more remarkable than the exterior of his store might indicate to the casual passer-by.

Invariably situated behind the counter, Bernie had the innate ability to read the incoming customer quicker and far better than The Racing Post nestled on his counter beside the tea mug.

The stories regaled were not always suitable for print in a general publication, but no-one was left injured by his sharp wit and ability to turn any conversation into an opportunity for humour.
