Officials of Limerick City and County Council have confirmed that they are to begin badly needed repairs to footpaths in Ballylanders.

The announcement came after Fine Gael TD Patrick O’Donovan and local Councillor Gerald Mitchell impressed upon the Council the need to have the damage fixed. Deputy O’Donovan said that he had been raising the issue with the Council offices in Kilmallock for some time following representations from residents and traders in Ballylanders.

The work is set to begin in August and is being funded by the Council through the Development Levy Contribution Scheme.

RURAL COMMITMENT VITAL

Deputy O’Donovan emphasised how important it is that small towns and villages across Limerick continue to receive funding from this source and said that he had recently raised the issue to Limerick City and County Council of the need to invest in small towns and villages, which are the ‘lifeblood’ of rural County Limerick.

“Recently we saw the announcement by the Minister for Sport, Michael Ring of over €1.2 million for 31 Limerick sports clubs and this money will be largely used for construction related works in many small rural communities and will undoubtedly be a badly needed investment in these parishes,” he said.

However, he also added that he would continue to campaign for further progress to be made.

“I will be continuing to impress on Government the need to make further progress in relation to rural development and I welcome the Taoiseach’s commitment for a designated Minister for Rural Development,” he concluded.
